In short

Hair smoothening is a mild chemical relaxing service that softens your natural texture and gives a straighter, flatter fall than keratin, typically lasting four to six months. It is gentler than rebonding but it does alter the internal bonds, so it is a genuine commitment with a visible regrowth line. If you mainly want frizz control with your texture intact, keratin or nanoplastia is usually the better choice.

Smoothening, straightening, rebonding: they are not the same

These three words get used interchangeably in salon conversations across Rajkot, and that confusion is the source of most disappointed guests. Getting the vocabulary right before you sit in the chair is the single most useful thing you can do.

Smoothening uses a mild relaxing cream to loosen some of the bonds that hold your hair's shape, then a neutraliser to reset them in a softer, straighter configuration. The result is hair that falls straighter and flatter, but retains a little natural body. Rebonding, sometimes sold as permanent straightening, uses a stronger formulation to break and reform those bonds much more completely, producing pin-straight, glass-flat hair. Keratin, by contrast, is not a relaxing service at all. It coats and seals the cuticle with protein and simply removes frizz without restructuring anything.

What smoothening actually does inside the hair

Your hair holds its curl or wave through disulphide bonds inside the cortex. A smoothening cream partially breaks those bonds so the fibre can be reshaped. The stylist then blow-dries and flat-irons the hair into a straighter form while the bonds are open, and applies a neutraliser that re-forms them in that new configuration.

Because only some of the bonds are broken, smoothening is gentler than rebonding and leaves a softer, more natural fall. But it is still chemistry acting on the inside of your hair, which is why it produces a permanent change to the treated section. New growth comes in with your original texture, so around the four to six month mark you will see a line where treated and untreated hair meet. That line is normal and expected, and it is the main practical difference between smoothening and keratin.

Who smoothening suits

  • Wavy or loosely curly hair that you want to fall genuinely straighter, not just smoother.
  • Thick, coarse hair that takes a long time to blow-dry every single morning.
  • Anyone who has tried keratin and found it did not give a flat enough result.
  • Hair that puffs badly in Rajkot's humidity and refuses to hold a blow-dry past lunchtime.
  • Guests who are comfortable with a regrowth line and a long-term commitment.

It is the wrong choice if your hair is heavily bleached or already fragile, if your scalp is irritated or has open patches, if you love your natural wave and only want frizz gone, or if you are unwilling to change to sulphate-free products. It is also generally postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, purely as a sensible default rather than because of any proven risk.

How the three treatments compare

TreatmentChemical actionResultRegrowth lineTypical longevity
KeratinNone on internal bonds, coats the cuticleFrizz-free with wave retainedNo, fades evenly3 to 5 months
NanoplastiaAcidic, deposits actives in the cortexGlass-smooth with movementNo, fades evenly4 to 6 months
SmootheningMild relaxing of some bondsStraighter and flatter, some body leftYes, visible at roots4 to 6 months
RebondingStrong breaking and reforming of bondsPin-straight and flatYes, sharply visible6 to 8 months

Read that table twice before you book. Most guests who arrive asking for smoothening actually want the keratin or nanoplastia outcome, and a good stylist will say so rather than take the larger booking.

The process at Selestia

  1. 1.Consultation, elasticity test and colour-history review. If your hair snaps on a stretch test, we will recommend a repair course first and revisit smoothening later.
  2. 2.Strand test on any hair that has been bleached, highlighted or previously chemically treated.
  3. 3.Written consent, covering exactly what smoothening does, that it is not reversible on treated hair, and what the regrowth will look like.
  4. 4.Gentle pre-wash without scalp massage, so the scalp is not sensitised before the cream goes on.
  5. 5.Application of the relaxing cream on fine sections, held off the scalp, with careful timing per section based on your hair's condition.
  6. 6.Processing and continuous checks. This is the stage where over-processing happens if a stylist walks away.
  7. 7.Rinse, blow-dry and flat-iron in slow, even passes at a temperature matched to your hair.
  8. 8.Neutraliser application to reset the bonds, then a final rinse and mask.
  9. 9.Finish and a written aftercare briefing covering the first seventy-two hours.

Expect three to five hours, longer for very dense or waist-length hair. It is done in our private, ladies-only atelier in Shastri Nagar with proper ventilation, and we will happily explain each stage in Gujarati, Hindi or English as we go.

How long it lasts in Rajkot, and what regrowth looks like

The treated hair stays smoothened permanently. What changes is the proportion of your hair that is treated, because new growth arrives with your natural texture. Most guests find that after four to six months there is enough regrowth at the roots for the contrast to be noticeable, especially at the crown and hairline where hair grows fastest and where humidity hits first.

At that point you have three options: a root touch-up of smoothening on the new growth only, which is what we would do; growing it out and cutting off the treated length gradually; or switching to keratin over the top for frizz control while the texture grows back. What you should never do is have full-length smoothening applied again over already-treated hair. Repeating chemistry on the same section is the classic route to breakage.

Does smoothening damage your hair?

Honest answer: it carries more risk than keratin or nanoplastia, because it acts on the internal bond structure rather than the cuticle. Done properly on suitable hair, with correct timing, correct iron temperature and correct neutralising, the damage is modest and manageable with good aftercare. Done on bleached hair, or left on too long, or ironed at three hundred degrees on fine hair, it can cause severe breakage that no treatment will undo.

This is why the assessment matters more than the smoothing itself. We regularly tell guests that their hair is not in a state to take smoothening yet, and suggest six to eight weeks of repair and conditioning first. That conversation costs us a booking and saves a head of hair, which is a trade we are happy to make.

Aftercare

  • Do not wash, tie, clip or tuck your hair for seventy-two hours. Any bend set in this window can become permanent.
  • Sleep with hair loose and straight for the first three nights.
  • Move permanently to a sulphate-free and salt-free shampoo and conditioner.
  • Rinse with cool or lukewarm water only.
  • Book a deep conditioning or protein spa two weeks after the service, then every three to four weeks.
  • Trim every eight to ten weeks. Smoothened ends show wear sooner because the fibre has been chemically relaxed.
  • Wait at least two weeks before any hair colour, and never bleach smoothened hair without a strand test.
  • Use heat protection whenever you style, even though you will need far less heat now.

What drives the cost in Rajkot

Length and density dominate, since product volume and chair time both scale with them. After that: the professional system used, the seniority of the stylist, whether a repair or bond-protection add-on is included, and whether aftercare products are part of the package. A quote that seems far below the local range usually means a generic relaxer, junior application or no neutralising step done properly, and all three show up in your hair within a month.

We quote on enquiry after seeing or assessing your hair. It is the only responsible way to price a service where the same treatment name can mean four hours on one guest and seven on another.

The takeaway

Hair smoothening is the right answer when you genuinely want a straighter fall and you accept the regrowth line and the commitment that comes with it. It is the wrong answer, and an unnecessarily heavy one, if what you actually want is frizz-free hair that still moves. Get your hair assessed honestly, insist on a strand test if you have any colour history, and treat the seventy-two-hour rules as non-negotiable. If you would like a straight answer on which treatment suits your hair, come and see us in Shastri Nagar.
