In short

Keratin is a semi-permanent smoothing treatment that coats and seals the hair shaft with protein, then locks it in with heat. It cuts frizz dramatically, halves blow-dry time and lasts roughly three to five months in Rajkot's climate. It does not permanently straighten hair, and it is not suitable for everyone. The honest markers of a good keratin salon are a strand test, a consent conversation, professional products and clear aftercare rules.

What a keratin treatment actually does

Your hair is made largely of keratin, a fibrous protein. Colouring, bleaching, heat styling, sun and hard water all chip away at that protein and leave microscopic gaps along the cuticle. Those gaps are what make hair feel rough, look dull, tangle easily and puff up the moment humidity arrives. A keratin treatment deposits a keratin-rich formula into and around those gaps, then a flat iron at a controlled temperature seals it into a smooth, uniform outer layer.

The important word is semi-permanent. Keratin does not break and reform the disulphide bonds inside your hair the way rebonding does. It sits on and within the cuticle, gradually washing away over months, and your natural texture returns unchanged underneath. That is precisely why it is a gentler option than permanent straightening, and also why it fades rather than leaving a harsh line of demarcation as it grows out.

What it feels like afterwards

Most guests describe three changes. Frizz drops to almost nothing, even on a humid August afternoon. Hair develops a glassy, light-reflecting shine because the cuticle is finally lying flat. And styling time collapses, often by half, because the hair dries smooth on its own instead of needing constant tension and heat.

What you should not expect is poker-straight hair. A well-done keratin on wavy hair leaves you with a softer, looser, more manageable wave. On curly hair it loosens the curl and removes the frizz halo, but the curl pattern is still there. If somebody promises you that keratin will turn tight curls into a straight sheet, they are either overselling or planning to do something more aggressive than keratin.

Who keratin suits, and who should wait

Keratin is a strong fit if your hair is frizzy, coarse, wavy or unruly, if you spend a long time blow-drying, if humidity ruins your hair within an hour of stepping out, or if your hair is coloured and has started to feel rough. It is also popular with brides who want low-maintenance hair through a wedding week.

It is a poor fit, or at least worth postponing, if your hair is already heavily bleached and fragile, if you have an irritated or broken scalp, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and would rather avoid fumes entirely, or if you are not willing to change your shampoo. That last one matters more than people expect. Sulphate shampoos and salt-heavy products will strip a keratin treatment in weeks, and then the treatment gets blamed instead of the aftercare.

The Selestia keratin process, step by step

  1. 1.Consultation and honest assessment. We look at your porosity, elasticity, colour history and scalp condition, and we tell you if keratin is the wrong choice for your hair right now.
  2. 2.Strand test where needed. Especially on bleached, highlighted or previously treated hair, we test a hidden section first to see how it takes.
  3. 3.Consent form. Every chemical service at Selestia begins with a written consent conversation covering what the treatment does, how long it lasts and what it will not do.
  4. 4.Clarifying wash. A deep-cleansing shampoo opens the cuticle and removes hard-water minerals, oil and product, so the formula can bond evenly.
  5. 5.Sectioned application. The formula is applied on fine sections from roots-adjacent to ends, kept off the scalp, with even saturation. Patchy application is the number one cause of patchy results.
  6. 6.Processing time. The product is left to develop for the manufacturer's recommended window, in a ventilated space.
  7. 7.Blow-dry to the correct moisture level. Under-drying or over-drying at this stage both compromise the seal.
  8. 8.Flat-iron sealing. Multiple slow passes at a temperature matched to your hair's condition. This is the step where skill shows most.
  9. 9.Cool down, rinse where the system requires it, and finishing. We then walk you through the aftercare rules in detail before you leave.

Expect two to four hours in the chair depending on length and density. Very long or very thick hair takes longer, and rushing any of the steps above is exactly how a treatment ends up uneven.

The formaldehyde question, answered plainly

Classic Brazilian-style keratin formulas relied on formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents to seal the protein, and those released fumes when heated. Modern professional systems from established lines are formulated to be formaldehyde-free or to use safer aldehyde derivatives, and they are used in ventilated spaces with the product kept off the scalp.

You are entitled to ask what is being used on your head. At Selestia the product is shown to you, the tube is opened in front of you, and we will tell you the system by name. If a salon anywhere will not tell you what they are applying or gets defensive about the question, that is your answer. Pregnant and breastfeeding guests are usually advised to postpone, not because of a proven risk with modern formulas but because avoiding unnecessary exposure is simply the sensible default.

How long keratin lasts in Rajkot

Three to five months is the realistic range here. That is slightly shorter than the numbers you will see quoted internationally, and the reason is local. Hard water deposits minerals that lift the treatment, our summers are long and the sun oxidises the seal, and frequent washing in the heat accelerates the fade. Guests who use a sulphate-free system and rinse cool routinely get five months. Guests who go back to a supermarket shampoo often get two.

Keratin also fades rather than dropping off a cliff. You will notice frizz creeping back at the crown and the hairline first, usually around month three, and that is normal. There is no awkward regrowth line because the treatment does not restructure the hair, which makes it easy to simply stop if you decide not to repeat it.

Keratin compared with the other smoothing options

Rajkot salons offer four treatments that all promise smooth hair, and they are genuinely different. This is the short version.

Hair services

Aftercare rules that decide your result

These are not suggestions. Keratin is one of the few services where the guest genuinely controls half the outcome.

  • Do not wash, tie, clip or tuck your hair behind your ears for seventy-two hours, unless your stylist tells you the system allows earlier washing. Any bend set in that window can become a permanent kink.
  • Switch permanently to a sulphate-free and salt-free shampoo and conditioner. This single change is worth two extra months of wear.
  • Rinse with cool or lukewarm water, never hot.
  • Avoid chlorinated pools and sea water, or wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in before swimming.
  • Skip clarifying and anti-dandruff shampoos, which are designed to strip and will strip this too.
  • Delay a fresh hair colour by at least two weeks, and tell your colourist you have had keratin.
  • Keep heat styling moderate. You will need far less of it anyway.
  • Book a colour-safe, sulphate-free hair spa every three to four weeks to keep the lengths conditioned.

What drives the cost of keratin in Rajkot

You will see a wide spread of prices across the city, and the spread is usually explained by four things: the length and density of your hair, the professional system being used, how many hours of a senior stylist's time it takes, and whether the salon includes the aftercare shampoo and conditioner. A very low quote almost always means a diluted or generic formula, a junior doing the sectioning, or aftercare left entirely to you.

We share prices on enquiry rather than publishing a single number, because quoting before seeing hair is how guests end up with a surprise at the counter. Send us a photograph and tell us your length and your colour history, and we will give you an honest figure and an honest opinion on whether keratin is even the right treatment for you.

How to pick the best keratin salon in Rajkot

  • They assess your hair and refuse the service if it is not suitable, rather than saying yes to everything.
  • They run a strand test on chemically lightened hair.
  • They name the product system and open it in front of you.
  • They take a written consent before starting.
  • The space is ventilated, and the formula is kept off your scalp.
  • They apply on fine, even sections rather than rushing large chunks.
  • They give you the seventy-two-hour rules in writing, not as a passing comment.
  • They tell you what keratin will not do, especially about curl pattern.

The takeaway

Keratin is one of the most satisfying services we do, because the change is immediate and it makes daily life genuinely easier in a city as humid and hard-watered as ours. It is also one of the easiest services to do badly. Choose a salon that assesses before it sells, insist on knowing the product, and commit to sulphate-free aftercare. Do that and you will get four or five months of hair that behaves. Skip any of it and you will get six weeks and a complaint. If you would like an honest assessment first, come and see us in Shastri Nagar.
